I’m really lucky right now, as I have lots of access to lots of apple trees. Which means, lots of fresh picked apples. What to do with all those tart fresh apples? Well, there are desserts that can be made (see below for some more ideas), or a simple Crock Pot or Slow Cooker Apple Butter sounds great!
As for the apples in this Crock Pot or Slow Cooker Apple Butter, the ones I used are all Granny Smith. Any kind of apple you like will be great. A mix of apples will provide nice flavor as well.
So, if you have some apples in the fridge that you aren’t eating, use those. Apples from a U-pick apple place, great! Or, fresh from the tree as well.

How to wash apples
If you’re using purchased grocery store non-organic apples you may want to wash them in a mixture of one teaspoon of baking soda for every two cups of water. This will help get the pesticides off of them. Want to read more about this? Take a look at this article here.
I had gathered the apples from one of my trees, so I had a big container full. I used those for my apple butter, and I think I used about 10-12 of those apples. Now, of course the number of apples you’ll need will vary depending on the size, but this number should get you in the ballpark.
I like the simplicity of this apple butter, just a little sugar and some cinnamon for a perfectly spiced and sweetened apple butter.
Use it on your morning toast or on crackers. Give it away as gifts; just tie a pretty ribbon on the jar, and your gift is ready to create lots of smiles! Spread it on muffins or mix it in a cake. I’ll be bringing some other ways to use this great fall treat soon as well.
Apple butter can be canned in a hot water bath or top with paraffin. I don’t actually go through the canning process, but if you would like to do so, please follow the instructions from the USDA’s National Center for Home Food Preservation or the official site from the makers of Ball jars.

Crock Pot or Slow Cooker Apple Butter Recipe
Crock Pot or Slow Cooker Apple Butter
- 10 cups cored and chopped apples
- ¾ cup dark brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon cinnamon
- Place apple chunks in crock pot, and sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon over the top. Cover and cook on high for 4 ½ hours, stirring occasionally.
- After 4 ½ hours, remove lid, and stir. Continue cooking for 1 hour, uncovered.
- Allow apple butter to cool slightly. For a chunky apple butter, it’s done. For a smooth apple butter, transfer to a blender and puree until smooth, or use an immersion blender.
- Transfer apple butter to airtight containers, and store in refrigerator for up to two weeks or store in the freezer for up to 2 months.
