How to Use Yummly: a tutorial on how to sign up and add recipes to Yummly.
I love having helpful tutorials, and get lots of positive feedback from my readers on them. Here are some of my favorites! How to ship baked goods, What to do with leftover cream, How to host a taco bar party, and How food affects sleep.
I’ve been using the site Yummly for a little while now, and really like it. It’s easy to add recipes to their site using their bookmarklet, and it’s a great way to find new recipes.
I’ve seen other bloggers have questions about Yummly, so I thought I’d do a tutorial on some basics of how to add a recipe to their site.
So, this post is a guide on how to add recipes (whether they’re yours as a blogger, or someone else’s) to Yummly.
For more info on how to set up to see suggested recipes & configure your preferences go here or here.
To sign up for the 1st time. Go to their website, and create an account using the green box on the right of the site.
Choose how you want to sign up, then fill in the appropriate blanks.
Profile
Make sure to fill out your profile; you’ll find it on the right side with the drop down box under your name. Once you complete your profile it’ll show all of your social media links as well.
If you’re missing a profile picture, you can fill out this form to request one.
Bookmarklet
After completing the sign up procedure, you’ll want to install the bookmarklet on your browser.
Find the bookmarklet under the + in the upper right of the site.
They have some more detailed instructions on the bookmarklet here, but if you’ve installed other bookmarklets, it’s really easy.
Yum
Now the fun part!
When you’re on a website or blog and you find a recipe you like, you can, YUM that recipe by hitting the Yum bookmarklet button on your browser.
It opens a pop-up window (with a funny quote by Julia Childs), adds the recipe to your recipe box, and then tells you it’s complete.
You can then view that recipe and categorize it by adding it to a collection (like Dinner, Breakfast, Soup, Salad, etc), or simply close the pop-up window.
Bloggers: When you use the yum bookmarklet to Yum a recipe, it only pulls the ingredients, but directs the user to your site for the instructions.
That’s just like a rich pin on Pinterest.
So, publish the full recipe from your blog first. Then yum it with the bookmarklet.
Add a Recipe to a Collection
To add the recipe to a collection, click View Recipe Box, click on the Yum button on the recipe you’d like to categorize, and choose the appropriate collection by clicking the box in front of the collection name.
Click on the Collections tab at the top of your profile to see all your collections. You can also create a new collection using the box on the left.
Adding a Yum Button
If you’re a blogger they also have a Yum button that you can add to your site.
To add your own, scroll down to the bottom of the Yummly site (probably easiest to do when you’re on your profile page) until you see the bottom footer.
Go to Goodies and Tools under Recipe Tools (I have it highlighted in the screen shot above). That will open up the Goodie and Tools page. Click Get the Button under Yum Button.
Now you’re on the Add the Yum Button page. Copy the code and paste it into your post. There are some detailed instructions for Blogger, WordPress, and plugins here and here.
Happy Yumming!

Debi, so you have to use the code for each post? You can’t just install it like the Pinterest button?
