If you’re looking for a coffee drink that’s a little different from the usual vanilla or caramel latte, this Iced Black Sesame Latte with Black Sesame Cold Foam is your new obsession. You can thank me later.

Black sesame adds a rich toasted nuttiness that pairs beautifully with coffee, while the fluffy sesame cold foam creates a creamy coffee shop-style finish. It’s easy to make at home with just a handful of ingredients and delivers delicious flavor that’s both comforting and refreshing.

This Iced Black Sesame Latte is a fun drink year round, but I thought it was especially fun at Halloween! Those black colors just go so well with the season! And it’s always hot where I live around the fall, so this is a great way to cool off. Happy Halloween!

What Does Black Sesame Taste Like?

Black sesame has a rich, nutty flavor with subtle roasted notes that pair beautifully with coffee. The flavor is earthy, slightly sweet, and reminiscent of toasted nuts or tahini. It’s been my go-to drink at coffee shops for a while now. It’s so easy to make at home and save some money!

How to make

A creamy, nutty, and slightly sweet Iced black sesame coffee topped with black sesame cold foam. This easy coffee shop-style drink combines strong coffee, milk, and toasted black sesame flavor for a great homemade latte that feels special enough for a café treat but is simple enough to make at home.

I have tips and tricks for you here in the post, and the full recipe is below on the printable recipe card. Be sure to scroll down.

Let’s talk a little about the coffee. Make it with your favorite. A medium or dark roast works best with the nutty flavors of the black sesame. Choose whichever you like and adjust the strength to taste.

  • Strong brewed coffee
  • Cold brew concentrate
  • Coffee concentrate
  • Espresso: Brew a couple of shots of your favorite espresso using an espresso machine.
  • Espresso-style instant coffee
  • Moka Pot espresso

Chill the coffee before assembling if you want a colder drink with less ice dilution.

Make the cold foam

ingredients to make cold foam on the left and the black sesame cold foam on the right.

Whisk the black sesame powder thoroughly to prevent clumps. Here’s the black sesame powder I use, and I really like it.

I like using the handheld milk frother or a handheld immersion blender with a whisk attachment to make the cold foam.

Don’t overwhip the cold foam. It should remain pourable rather than becoming stiff whipped cream. And be careful, it goes from liquid to really thick in no time flat. (Of course, if you overwhip it, it’s still delicious, and we just eat it with a spoon. It can also be frozen in small pieces for a fun cold treat. Check out my what to do with leftover cream post for more info on freezing cream like this.)

Make the iced black sesame latte

Mix the black sesame powder into the coffee before adding milk. This helps it distribute more evenly.

Adjust the sugar to your preferred sweetness level.

Use a clear glass to showcase the layers of the latte and cold foam.

a glass of ice on the left and with the latte poured over the ice on right.

Can I make this dairy free?

For a dairy-free version, use and your favorite non-dairy milk like oat milk, soy milk, or almond milk in the latte. For the foam, use a plant-based whipping cream that can be whipped into a light foam.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the Cream topped black sesame latte with Ube Cookies, Matcha cookies, Shortbread cookies, Butter cookies, mochi doughnuts, or sweet potato rice balls.

Notes

Keep an eye on the cream while whipping it for the cold foam, it can be overwhipped very quickly.
“Coffee concentrate” can vary significantly in strength. Use an appropriate amount based on one serving. If using espresso, 1 shot may taste mild compared to the amount of milk. Two shots will provide a stronger coffee flavor.
Black sesame powder can clump. Be sure to whisk thoroughly.
Be sure to let the coffee cool, or use refrigerated coffee, as cooling first prevents excessive dilution.
Adjust the sweetness level to your choice by increasing or decreasing the sugar in the cold foam or latte.

These are my favorite lattes right now. So good and so creamy, but the black sesame flavor just makes it this luscious nutty flavor. I just know you’ll love these! Debi, author, Life Currents
