Did you know you can make homemade Ginger Chews Simple Syrup? All it takes is gently dissolving the chews in water over heat. Since ginger chews already contain both sugar and bold ginger flavor, this recipe needs just two ingredients and comes together in about 15 minutes. No peeling, chopping, or grating fresh ginger required! The result is a perfectly balanced syrup with warm, sweet heat and cozy spice in every pour.

This Ginger Simple Syrup made with ginger chews is incredibly versatile. Use it to elevate drinks of all kind like cocktails and mocktails, drizzle it over pancakes or oatmeal, or stir it into coffee and chai-spiced drinks. It’s also delicious on desserts and makes a beautiful homemade gift when poured into a pretty jar. Perfect for holiday cocktails, this syrup stores well, can be made ahead of time, and is freezer-friendly too.

What are ginger chews?

Ginger chews are soft, chewy candies made with real ginger root, sugar, and other natural ingredients, with a nice balance of sweetness and gentle heat with a warm, zesty kick. Often enjoyed as a convenient, individually wrapped snack, they’re commonly used to help settle the stomach and ease nausea, including morning sickness. Ginger chews are also valued for ginger’s potential anti-inflammatory and anti-nausea properties, making them both tasty and functional.

Thanks to ginger’s natural compounds, ginger chews are widely used to soothe nausea from motion sickness, pregnancy, or medical treatments, without causing drowsiness. They may also support digestion by promoting stomach emptying, reducing gas and bloating, and easing general digestive discomfort.

You can buy ginger chews in most health food stores, well stocked grocery stores, and Asian markets. Amazon also carries them. I often find them in the bulk sections of some stores, which allows you to buy just as many as you like, rather than a whole bag full of them.

How to make

Ginger chews candies wrapped and unwrapped ones in a measuring cup on left and a syrup made from the candies on right.
Unwrap the candies and measure them out. Then simply melt them in a small saucepan with water.

This syrup is really easy to make, and the longest part might just be unwrapping the candies. Once you’ve unwrapped them, you’ll use 1 part candies to 2 parts water and dissolve the candies in the water over medium-low heat until the candies dissolve, about 10 minutes. You can strain out any solids that are left afterwards. That’s all there is to it! Be sure to scroll down to the printable recipe card below for the full ingredient amounts and instructions.

You can see my favorite brand in the picture above, but really any brand will work.

Storage and make ahead

This syrup is great made ahead, just store it in an airtight container like a glass mason jar with a tight-fitting lid in the fridge for up to one month. It’ll be ready to use when you need it.

For longer storage, you can store it in a freezer-safe container in the freezer for 2-4 months. I like to freeze it in ice cube trays or silicone mini muffin cups, then pop it into a freezer ziptop bag.

How to use

Think of it as your own homemade ginger ale!

There are so many great ways to use this syrup with its wonderfully spicy flavor.

Cocktails, mocktails, and drinks of all kinds:

  • I like 2 to 3 tablespoons of syrup added to a can of sparkling water – kind of like a homemade ginger beer
  • add some syrup to hot water and freshly squeezed lemon to make a quick ginger tea
  • Sweeten up a ginger tea with a little syrup
  • Splash in some syrup to a cup of brewed tea like chai, Earl grey, or a nice herbal tea
  • Zest up some sprite, apple cider (ohhh a nice hot mulled apple cider), or lemonade
  • And if you’re spending money on store bought ginger ale or ginger beer, this can save you some money
  • It’s great in a Moscow Mule or Dark and Stormy
  • Try it with some bourbon, spiced rum, whiskey, or a dark rich red wine for a great winter cocktail on those cold chilly nights

Desserts:

  • drizzle it over ice cream or pie
  • add some to whipped cream

Breakfasts:

  • serve it over pancakes or waffles or even mix a little bit into the batter
  • add it to your morning oatmeal for a great winter warmer

Savory:

  • Use as a glaze on chicken before roasting
  • Drizzle over veggies like winter squash or roasted veggies

Variations

This simple recipe will take well to variations.

You can spice it up by adding a cinnamon stick, cardamom pods, star anise, or cloves.

Add some vanilla extract at the end of cooking for a smooth flavor.

Make it a little sweeter and more flavorful with honey or brown sugar.

Use some of the other flavors of ginger chews like lychee, turmeric, honey, mango, orange, lemon, cinnamon, coconut, cacao, or reishi.

More ginger fabulousness!
