I have an exciting post for you today! In my Tips for Updating your Home I have updates about our home remodel!

As I’ve talked about, I’m currently going through a home remodel. We aren’t done, by any means. It’s a long and sometimes painful process. But I wanted to share some highlights and ways that you can update your home as well.

Update on the remodel

There have been many mistakes made in our home remodel, as there most likely will be in any project of this size.

Fixing up your home can be a rewarding experience, but it can be so difficult and frustrating to cope with the day to day.

I’m tired. I’m grumpy. And I just want it to be done.

But one thing I keep reminding myself of is when it’s done, I get to do some fun things. Keep that in mind for your project. And, I’ve been trying to update some smaller things along the way.

Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest impact when updating your home. You don’t have to go through the full remodel that we’ve chosen to do.

Maybe you just want to think smaller.

Changing out the hardware on your kitchen cabinets, for example. Or swapping lamps or lighting fixtures. Changing out the rugs in your home will make a big difference. Bring in more color or a softer cozier feel. And don’t forget to scroll down to enter our rug giveaway

More ways to update your home

These are so many things you can do to get a little more happiness in the home.

a metal vintage looking lamp on a table with some white bowls and a switch next to the lamp and a blanket behind it.
Lighting is an easy and affordable way to update your home. I’m just in love with this lamp! You can see the light switch we got here in the photo too. Now, we just need to install the switch on the wall.

Lighting

Note: the following sections contain affiliate links.

We’ve had additional recessed lights installed in the living room and kitchen. And, we’ll be updating the lighting fixtures in the kitchen and dining rooms areas. I’m super in love with these pendant lights for the kitchen!

You can also simply update the hanging light fixtures, or add additional lamps for an easy update that isn’t too expensive or invasive.

We added this vintage metal lamp to the upstairs office area, and I absolutely adore it! The lamp came from Amazon and we also got a great light switch from Amazon. You simply plug the lamp into the control plug and you can use the switch to turn it on and off. The switch can be mounted to the wall so it looks just like a regular wall switch, but with no wiring or electrical work needed to install it. It’s the perfect solution for our office space!

I’ll be moving the dining room table into the front room to give us more space and a place to set our things when we come home.

Rethink the space

One of the things I’m having fun with is rethinking the space. I’m planning on moving the dining room table to the space where the living room used to be. There’s lots of space there, and we really don’t sit in the living room.

With the table moved to that space, we can plop our things down on the table as soon as we come in the door. Packages, keys, purse, whatever. And, it gives the table a little more room than its current spot.

Where the dining room table used to be is where I’ll put the Lahome rug with two cozy sitting chairs and a little table. Just the right space to sit and read or drink your morning coffee. Of course I’ll have a cozy blanket there to keep me warm too.

Also, I plan on adding more storage, maybe a hutch with some open shelving at the top. A place I can extend my kitchen storage into.

Near the front door I’ll be making a mud room type entrance. I already bought this rubber boot tray – that I love! I’ll put a bench so you can sit down and take your shoes on and off. And, I’ll be adding a hook area to hang things and some shoe storage.

You probably have spaces like this in your home too. Spaces where you can simply rearrange the furniture, and have a whole new look. Or at least a new outlook.

bedding & towels

Bedding is an affordable and easy way to change the colors in a room, as well as updating the style. Here are some great sheets that will help you feel updated and comfortable, and they’ll help you relax in style. Check out the sheets in California King, King, Queen, Full, and Twin sizes. And these Turkish blankets and throws.

Towels in the bathroom and kitchen are another way to update colors and textures. And who wouldn’t love soft new beautiful towels! Check out stunning Turkish towels from Gold Case: Bath towels and Hand towels for kitchen or bath.

Door Hardware

Updating the door hardware can help your home look fresh without spending a lot of money.

We will be getting new front door hardware, and eventually swapping out the interior hardware for black finished lever handles.

I’ve seen many reels on Facebook where they paint the door hardware. But honestly, I don’t recommend that. In my experience, it gets scratched too quickly and will look worn and dated soon.

Paint

Paint is the best way to completely change the look of your home. Yes, it takes some time, but it will totally change the look.

We’ve gone from the dingy looking green walls to a bright white color and I’m absolutely in love. It gives it a fresh happy glow.

You can paint all kinds of things too, from kitchen cabinets to furniture.

I’ll be picking up some of these paint touch up pens as well to help keep scuffs at bay.

Bathroom vanities

We decided, for cost savings, we would simply reinstall the old vanities. Later, we’ll consider replacing the bathroom varieties, or painting them. Painting is a great way to stay on budget.

We’ll definitely be replacing the bathroom faucets, which is another affordable way to update the home.

What other ideas have you done to update your home? Which ones would you do again? What would you avoid? Let me know in the comments.
