How to make
These creepy dirty or bloody Bandage cookies start with simple vanilla crème wafer cookies, that are decorated with perfectly edible frosting and jam.
The Great Value brand from Walmart is a good option for these, because the color is close to the average bandaid color. Plus, you can make a lot of cookies very cheaply. Win-win!
Lay the cookies out on parchment paper, a plate, or a rimmed baking tray.
Using a butter knife, place about ¼ teaspoon white frosting directly in the middle of each cookie. Gently spread it to make a square about 1-inch in size. You can use the lines on the cookie to line up your square.
If you don’t want to go the butter knife route, you can also place the frosting in a plastic bag and cut the corner tip of the bag off to pipe a square onto the middle of each cookie. Use an offset spatula to spread it out evenly.
Place a small dot of jelly right in the middle of the frosted square. You don’t need to wait for the frosting to dry to add the jelly.
There’s no set amount or jelly that you have to do, but you don’t want the jelly to overwhelm the frosting; make it look like a dot of blood on a bandaid.
Buy the jelly in those squeezable jars and you don’t even have to worry about a spoon!
Serve the cookies immediately.
Can I use something other than strawberry jelly?
Any seedless red jelly or jam will work for these.
You can also use red food gel used for decorating or writing on cakes or strawberry syrup (it’ll be a little thinner) for the blood spot.
Red candy melts will also work, just melt them and place a small dollop on top. Or you could tint white candy melts with red food coloring for the same effect.
Other changes to the recipe
Change up the wafer. Different brands will have different color tints. Use a chocolate wafer cookie for a darker colored bandage.
And you can change the white square – instead of using frosting, try marshmallow fluff or white chocolate or white candy melts.
How to store
These really don’t keep well, so only make enough that will be eaten. The cookie will become wet and soft when left with frosting on it for too long.
