Make these easy and realistic looking edible Homemade Candy Cigarettes for Halloween by dipping pretzel sticks in white chocolate, red colored chocolate, and black sugar. This novelty recipe for candy cigs is meant for a fun Halloween party for adults, not for the children.

I remember being a kid and getting candy cigarettes from trick or treating. We always played like it was so suave and fancy by pretend smoking those cigarettes. Of course, now no one would think of giving those out for Halloween. But you know, I never once smoked even though I played pretend with those candy sticks. And, I think these are just the same way. Pretend fun that means no harm, so please don’t get angry that I’m promotion smoking; I’m not. These are just for grown up fun (and p.s. I’ve never smoked a day in my life, and I don’t want to).

We had fun making and eating these cigarette lollies. They’re surprisingly tasty! Sweet and salty combine in this fun treat. You’ll also have lots of fun making these Acorn Donut Holes.

How to make

To make these cigarettes, the first step is to gather up the ingredients. You can make as many cigarettes as you like. Maybe leave an ashtray around on every table or in every room and see if anyone is brave enough to eat them. And don’t forget to scroll down to the printable recipe card below.

  • Pretzel sticks. Make cigars with pretzel rods. Or use thin breadsticks. I give an amount in the recipe card, but really you can make as many as you want.
  • White chocolate or white candy melts. I find that white chocolate tastes better than candy melts, but either will work just fine.
  • Coconut oil to keep the melted chocolate smooth and easy to work with.
  • Food coloring – red, black, maybe a bit of yellow. This can be liquid food coloring or gel food coloring. I find that gel works better in most cases.
  • White granulated sugar
  • Something to serve as an ashtray. I purchased the pretty white marble one on Amazon so it was nice and clean. I don’t suggest using a used one because it may be quite dirty and difficult to clean thoroughly.

Get working

Break the pretzel sticks into different lengths, as if they had been smoked for different amounts of time.

Melt the white chocolate and coconut oil.

White chocolate can be a little tricky to melt; it can burn easily. There are a couple ways to melt it – in the microwave or on the stove top in a double boiler. Your choice.

For large pieces of chocolate, make sure to chop them up into small pieces. This will help it melt faster and more evenly. If you’re using white chocolate chips, they’re already in nice small pieces, so no chopping necessary.

How to melt white chocolate in the microwave

Place the chocolate in a microwave safe dish, like a mug or small Pyrex dish. For this recipe, I suggest using a deep dish, but one that isn’t too big around, like a mug or small deep bowl.

Microwave the chocolate for 30 seconds then remove from the microwave and stir well, making sure to really get to the bottom of the bowl. Then, if it isn’t fully melted, place it back in the microwave and cook for 30 seconds more. Remove and stir again. Repeat until the melted chocolate is smooth.

How to melt white chocolate in a double boiler

Place water in the bottom pan of the double boiler, and make sure the water isn’t touching the bottom of the upper pan. Set it on medium heat until it’s simmering (with just some light bubbles around the outside edge. You don’t want a full rolling boil – that would be too much). Put the white chocolate chips in the upper pan and stir until the chocolate is smooth.

Get dipping

Next up, you’ll start dipping the pretzel sticks into the melted chocolate.

Leave a bit of the brown pretzel exposed at the tip. This is the filter part of the cig. The white chocolate is the paper wrapping. Scrape off any excess white chocolate from the side of the pretzel, and place the dipped pretzels on a parchment paper lined tray.

Place the tray with the dipped pretzels in the fridge or the freezer to set up for a few minutes.

Make the flame red glowing lit burning tip by adding red food coloring to the melted white chocolate, or by using red candy melts. I mixed in a tiny bit of yellow coloring to mimic fire, but I don’t think it’s necessary to do this.

Make the black sooty embers by placing granulated white sugar or sanding sugar in a plastic bag and adding a couple drops of black food coloring. A toothpick is a great way to add a little bit of food coloring gel. Start with adding a little food coloring at a time, until you like the color. If you add too much food coloring, the sugar will get too wet and sticky.

Massage the bag to distribute the color into the sugar. And the plastic bag helps keep your hands clean. I sprinkled on a little bit of red sanding sugar to mimic burning bits.

Now the fun part. Dip the tip of the dipped pretzels in the red melted chocolate and then dip the very end in the sugar ash. Place the dipped sticks back on the parchment paper lined tray, and let set. Continue dipping and decorating the sticks until you’ve made as many as you want.

Prop the candy cigs on an ashtray or plates. Sprinkle a little additional ash in the bottom of each ashtray. Not only are they a tasty treat, they are a fun Halloween decoration for your party!
