Recipe creation
I got a bottle of the Great North Maple Garlic Seasoning from The Spice House back in 2019. We loved it, using it on fish and veggies all the time. This seasoning mix honors Wisconsin’s maple industry by mixing maple sugar with bold, savory, and hearty spices.
I used up the jar and continue to miss it, so I thought I’d see if I could make a copycat version, which would save me money, and I could create it anytime I wanted more. I’m super happy with the version I created. Besides, you guys know I love making my own spice mixes so I can leave the salt out, or cut way back on the salt.
First step was to look at the ingredients in the jar: Maple sugar, brown sugar, garlic, kosher salt, pepper, onion, green onion. I got a bag of the maple sugar from Amazon. The rest of the ingredients I have in my cupboard.

Pro Tips
- Use real maple sugar (not maple-flavored sugar) for authenticity
- If your garlic powder is mild, bump it up to 1½ tablespoons
- For a slightly “chunkier” gourmet texture, mix in:
- 1 teaspoon granulated garlic
- 1 teaspoon dried onion flakes
- 1 teaspoon coarse black pepper
- If the blend clumps (maple sugar can do this), pulse briefly in a spice grinder
- I like to mix the spices together on a piece of parchment paper. This makes it easy to pick the paper up and use it like a funnel to pour into the storage jar.

Storage
Store this mix in a cool dark place, in an airtight container for up to 6 months. Be sure to keep it away from heat and humidity (maple sugar can harden).
Where to use this spice mix:
- Seafood: We use it all the time on salmon and other fish. It’s an easy maple glazed seafood option.
- Bacon: Sprinkle before baking
- Roasted veggies: sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts, butternut squash
- Proteins: roasted chicken, grilled pork
- Snack hack: popcorn with melted butter and this mix
- Beans: stir into baked beans for instant depth
- Breakfast: Mix with cream cheese and smear on a bagel

And I’ve served it with some simple sauteed bok choy.
