Anything that helps me feel better, I’m ALL for! That’s where this Cinnamon Sore Throat Tea comes in.

This tea for sore throat is good; it soothes and coats; comforts; it tastes yummy.

It’s the perfect tea recipe for sore throat.

Easy to make

It’s easy to make too, so even if you’re home alone and don’t feel like doing anything, you can make it quickly and crawl back in bed.

Make it in the microwave or on the stove-top, whatever’s easiest for you.

This Cinnamon Sore Throat Tea has ginger to help nausea as well, as I often get nauseous when I’m sick.

Anytime treat

Besides being great for when you aren’t feeling well, this cinnamon tea for sore throat is yummy anytime, as an evening snack to relax before bedtime, or as a breakfast drink instead of coffee.

What milk should I use?

Use the milk of your choice for this homemade tea for sore throat, dairy, plant-based, it’s all good, besides, I’m a big believer in using what already tastes good to you.

For the pictures I used two different kinds of milk so you could see there’s a little difference in the way it looks.

I used cashew milk and 2% dairy milk. Both were good, and both coated and soothed.

Can I use a different milk?

If you’re worried about the fact that milk may increase mucus (as many people have commented), again, feel free to use plant-based milk, as it works great!

There are so many kinds of milks that taste good – coconut, homemade cashew milk, cashew, rice, almond, soy, dairy milk, cream, use what you like, and what you feel comfortable with.

I’ve made this with all kinds of milks, and a whole bunch of brands of milks. Please note that a thinner milk may make the taste of the drink a bit spicier than a thicker creamier milk.

Why is it a tea?

In this instance, herbal tea is a hot drink made from the infusion of dried leaves, fruit, or flowers. Cinnamon and ginger are both dried materials coming from plants. So, this is a type of herbal tea.

These may be called tisanes or herbal infusions to prevent confusion, but for simplicity’s sake, it’s called a tea, just to simplify how it’s named.

Adding honey and milk and other ingredients helps to season and sweeten the drink.

If you’d like, feel free to add “tea” to the brew.

And, as I always say, don’t worry about what it’s called, just enjoy how delicious it is.

Or, feel free to call it a steamer. Or even call it a cinnamon herbal tea drink, nighty night milk drink, sore throat relief drink, warm milk drink, Cinnamon Milk, or sore throat remedy drink if you prefer.

Is cinnamon good for sore throat?

Cinnamon can do wonders to heal your sore throat. It may help fight throat pain and infection due to a cold or flu. Let’s look at the possible health benefits of cinnamon:

  • Acts as an expectorant to thin phlegm, making it easier to cough up
  • Cinnamon is believed to clear congested airways to relieve shortness of breath
  • It’s packed with antioxidants, which gives it a mild analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect
  • The spice has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties
  • May reduce fever and chills

Cinnamon Herbal tea has been a traditional remedy for healing cold, cough, flu and can help to soothe a sore throat.

Every person is different, and this is generic information only. It is in no way a substitute for qualified medical opinion. Always consult a specialist or your own doctor for more information.

There may be some possible side effects for some people. Cinnamon is generally considered safe; however, allergic reactions are possible. Certain types, specifically Cassia cinnamon, may promote blood thinning and should be used cautiously in people who take blood thinners or have clotting disorders.

Talk to your healthcare provider about this or any other natural and herbal remedies.

Can I use something other than honey?

Yes, you can replace the honey in this with maple syrup for a vegan alternative, or if you’re allergic to honey.

Or, use any liquid sweetener of choice.

Don’t give this to children under 1 year old, as honey isn’t safe for them.

Can I heat honey safely?

Heating up raw honey will change the makeup of the honey, and potentially weaken or destroy enzymes, vitamins, and minerals, but it will not give you a horrible disease, turn it toxic, cause you to get sick, or poison you.

Yes, prolonged exposure to very high temperatures in the oven or on the grill honey can potentially weaken or destroy some of the nutritional make-up of the honey. But this recipe does not have you heat it in a prolonged or aggressive manner.

Even within the beehive itself honey can reach temperatures of 95° F. So, heating honey to around this temperature is just fine, and will leave the health benefits of the honey intact.

In addition, heating up crystallized honey is a great way to make the honey more liquid and easier to handle.

So rest assured, that heating honey in this recipe is perfectly safe.

Spices

As for the spices in the drink, yes, you can feel free to play around with them.

If you’re allergic to ginger or can’t have it due to medical reasons, try swapping it with cardamom, turmeric, allspice, nutmeg, or mace. Or simply leave it out.

Add a dash of vanilla extract or almond extract if you like!

Each spice will change the flavor a bit, but you might find a spice blend that suits you perfectly!

Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup milk use your favorite dairy or plant-based
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon powdered ground ginger
  • 1 tablespoon mild tasting honey

Instructions
 

  • Place milk in a small saucepan and scald (heat) on low until hot but not boiling. Stir in the cinnamon, ginger, and honey until well mixed. Sip to soothe.
  • Or, place all ingredients in a microwave safe cup and microwave on high for 1-1 ½ minutes (microwave times will vary), or until hot. Stir, and sip.
