I first shared this recipe in 2011, when I made it to go along with homemade corn tortillas. It’s a recipe I make all the time around here. So good and so easy to make. It perks up a simple can of black beans so nicely!

How to make
This super simple black bean recipe starts off with a can of black beans and doctors it up with herbs and spices to make the perfect balance of flavors.
And the recipe will help you answer the question, “How to make black beans taste good?”

Grab your black beans can and get cooking!

Place all ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat.
Bring to a boil, mashing the beans with the back of a wooden spoon against the side of the saucepan as you stir. The beans will get softer the longer they are cooked, and therefore easier to mash.
Beans will continue to thicken up as they cool down, so stop mashing just before you think they are done.
If the beans get too thick, add a little more broth or water to thin them.

Seasoned Black Beans
Ingredients
- 15 ounces low sodium black beans drained and rinsed
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 bay leaf
- ½ cup vegetable broth or water
Instructions
- Place all ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil, mashing the beans with the back of a wooden spoon against the side of the saucepan as you stir. The beans will get softer the longer they are cooked, and therefore easier to mash. Continue stirring and mashing beans until you reach the desired chunkiness. Beans will thicken as they cool. If the beans get too thick, add a little more broth.
