Learn how to cook black beans and give them lots of flavor in a way that’s super easy and quick! Serve these Seasoned Black Beans as a hearty side dish or add them to your favorite Mexican foods like tacos or burritos.

I first shared this recipe in 2011, when I made it to go along with homemade corn tortillas. It’s a recipe I make all the time around here. So good and so easy to make. It perks up a simple can of black beans so nicely!

Homemade tacos from scratch

Those tacos were so good! Homemade tortillas with Seasoned Black Bean Mash, Verde Queso Fun-dito, Roasted tomato salsa, and Homemade Guacamole! I still have the full instructions on the tortillas if you want to learn how to make your own. Someday soon I’ll have to remake them and take new pictures. I also want to remake and photo the queso.

But for now, I’ve updated the black bean recipe with new photos, information, and a space of its own.

Not just regular old canned black beans, these ones are filled with flavor, and they’re really moist. You’ll love this canned black beans recipe!

Grab your black beans can and get cooking!

black bean ingredients in a pan on left, and cooked and mashed together on right.

Place all ingredients in a small saucepan over medium heat.

Bring to a boil, mashing the beans with the back of a wooden spoon against the side of the saucepan as you stir. The beans will get softer the longer they are cooked, and therefore easier to mash.

Beans will continue to thicken up as they cool down, so stop mashing just before you think they are done.

If the beans get too thick, add a little more broth or water to thin them.
